This project aims to pilot and integrate into daily operations a sustainable, resource-efficient technology for converting plant byproducts generated near farms into valuable components, particularly protein-rich algal biomass.
The project processes byproducts from vegetable production via hydrolysis and uses the hydrolysate as a nutrient source for heterotrophic microalgae. The result is protein-rich algal biomass that can be used on the participating farm as feed for fattening pigs. In addition to on-site pilot testing and integration into daily farm operations, the project aims to establish new value chains and a circular economy on the farm in order to tap into additional sales channels and generate additional income. Decentralized processes are intended to reduce dependence on external nutrient sources, minimize environmental impacts, and promote the transfer of knowledge and technology. At the same time, the project strengthens the competitiveness of agricultural regions and supports rural development through alternative marketing systems in the context of growing demand for plant-based proteins. Technical, economic, social, and environmental aspects are being considered. A fully operational prototype for microalgae production is currently available; environmental impacts, process optimization, and protocols are being further investigated.
