The main objective of the CIPROMED project is to enhance the stability and resilience of agricultural and food production systems in the Mediterranean region through the direct use of locally produced traditional crops and the valorization of proteins derived from locally generated agro-industrial by-products (e.g., brewers’ grains, oilseed expeller) and to upcycle and bioconvert their extraction residues into proteins produced by insects, legumes, microalgae, and fermentation products for further use in the agricultural and feed sectors.
CIPROMED aims to reduce Mediterranean countries’ dependence on imported proteins and to establish a locally adapted, socioeconomically viable, and environmentally sustainable alternative protein value chain. Using a multi-stakeholder approach, insects and microalgae are cultivated using agricultural residues and extraction by-products to achieve higher protein yields. Insect feed closes the loop by serving as fertilizer for legumes such as lupins and field beans. Using sustainable extraction methods, high-quality proteins are obtained from residues, insects, legumes, and microalgae for food and feed applications. In addition, the project is examining consumer preferences while taking cultural and religious characteristics into account. Compared to conventional systems, greenhouse gas emissions are expected to be significantly lower. Furthermore, protein-based dietary approaches are being developed to support human metabolism and the immune system.
