CLIMAQUA draws on fundamental and applied knowledge from aquaculture and feed production and takes site-specific environmental conditions into account in particular in order to establish feed production that is as efficient and environmentally friendly as possible, thereby significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions from the aquaculture food system.
CLIMAQUA is developing a process to convert aquaculture by-products (sludge and wastewater) into algae/cyanobacteria biomass (Arthrospira platensis) and use it to produce feed for aquaculture. Since feed production in conventional systems accounts for about 50% of greenhouse gas emissions, this approach aims to significantly reduce emissions while creating a circular system. The starting point is that about 40% of the feed used ends up in the sludge, thereby forming a nutrient-rich substrate for the cultivation of A. platensis. Geographic and site-specific factors such as temperature and duration of sunshine are used to optimize phototrophic and heterotrophic cultivation, respectively, and to achieve the most complete possible utilization of byproducts. The project is collaborating with partners from Norway, Germany, Kenya, and South Africa to assess its transferability to different countries and climate zones and to promote climate-adapted, sustainable aquaculture systems.
