Triboelectric separation is being researched as a sustainable dry separation process for the production of protein-enriched powders from plant-based raw materials. The process is based on the different surface charges of particles in plant meal, which allows proteins and dietary fiber to be concentrated in separate fractions without the use of chemicals, water, or high temperatures.
Demand for highly functional plant-based proteins is on the rise because they offer environmental and sustainability advantages over animal proteins. The project is investigating triboelectric separation as a low-energy, chemical-free dry separation process for producing protein-enriched powders from plant flours. The separation is based on differences in the surface charges of the particles: proteins and dietary fiber carry different charges and can thus be enriched into separate fractions without compromising protein functionality through heat or chemicals. Particle size and pretreatment are critical for separation; therefore, grinding and particle sizes are being systematically investigated. The raw materials are lupins, field beans, and yellow peas. Initial experiments showed the highest protein enrichment with the finest grinding: 50% (DM) for field beans and 62% (DM) for lupins. Subsequently, techno-functional properties are analyzed, and the application potential of the powders is tested in extrusion trials.
