The EU project FoSSNet aims to establish a sustainable academic network for food systems research in Europe. Its goal is to promote open and inclusive science and education in order to drive the transformation of food systems. This is achieved through an integrative, interdisciplinary approach.
FoSSNet addresses the complex challenges facing European food systems—from sustainable production, distribution, and consumption to the impacts on nutrition, society, and the environment. To this end, a permanent interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary network is being established to strengthen collaboration between academia, policymakers, industry, and society. This systemic approach integrates various disciplines to develop a shared understanding and a common language for food systems research, thereby enabling solutions for a healthier, more equitable, and more sustainable system. In terms of content, the project combines network building and knowledge exchange, the further development of Food Systems Science through a conceptual framework—including dialogue formats and territorial labs—as well as educational activities such as curriculum development, the FoSSNet Academy, and summer academies. The DIL contributes its expertise in food technology and supports the development of innovative processes and practice-oriented solutions within the network.
