GIANT LEAPS supports dietary shifts as a means of reducing the food system’s carbon footprint. To this end, the project provides innovations, methods, and open-access datasets in line with the Farm-to-Fork strategy and the Green Deal (climate neutrality by 2050). The DIL is developing the open cloud data platform, a data collection protocol, and tools for gathering data on sustainability assessments.
GIANT LEAPS is accelerating the transition from animal-based to alternative proteins by addressing key knowledge gaps regarding protein sources, health, environmental impacts, and market introduction. Nine alternative protein sources were selected for targeted or comprehensive evaluation. The resulting innovations, methods, and open-access datasets support policymakers in prioritizing systemic measures, value chain stakeholders in making scientific, business, and investment decisions, and consumers in making more sustainable and healthier dietary choices. DIL (Food Data Group) is leading Work Package 6 on the development of a cloud-based data integration platform and is a key partner in Work Package 5 on sustainability and climate assessment. DIL has developed the platform’s interoperability ontology and an initial version of the data collection protocol, is conducting three environmental sustainability assessments, and is supporting the establishment of the Life-Cycle Inventory (LCI) data repository.
