In light of agricultural challenges, the EU-funded legumES project quantifies and assesses the ecological and economic benefits of legumes—such as peas, beans, lentils, chickpeas, and soybeans—in terms of ecosystem services. Both ecological and economic aspects are taken into account. With a consortium of 22 partners—including academic institutions, research organizations, SMEs, NGOs, and companies—legumES is pursuing an action-oriented research approach.
legumES optimizes ecosystem services in legume farming by involving stakeholders across the entire value chain. At its core are 25 pilot studies in various pedoclimatic regions of Europe that compare different species, varieties, and cultivation systems. The project promotes the adoption of proven, agrobiodiverse practices and develops methods, tools, and data to quantify the ecological and economic benefits as well as the costs of ecosystem services from the field to the global level. Based on this, contributions to EU goals are assessed: reduced use of agricultural chemicals, climate protection, increased biodiversity, and improved nutrient supply. An interdisciplinary team specializing in monitoring, life-cycle assessment, modeling, social sciences, policy, and decision support enables practical action research, including for legumes on marginal lands. Producers collaborate, test measures on their farms, and feed the results back into decision-making tools for advisory services, policymakers, and businesses to achieve a balance.
