Despite the wide variety of processes in the food industry, quality assessment is necessary across the board. Modern camera technologies combined with AI can enable standardized systems that are independent of specific products and industries. Since AI is still not widely used in the industry, exemplary application scenarios are intended to demonstrate its practical feasibility and transferability to various use cases.
Movi-Q is pioneering the use of AI for automated quality inspection in food processing. To this end, the company is developing a hardware and software system that reliably detects defects and can trigger downstream processes such as sorting. High-quality training data is a key success factor: To this end, a mobile, modular image capture unit is being developed that will be integrated into various production lines and will collect data using hyperspectral sensors, laser scanners, and conventional cameras. A standardized, systematic approach to integration and data collection aims to create a scalable system that can be deployed in various sectors of the food industry and enables more sustainable, competitive, and transparent quality control. The methodology is being validated using case studies involving potatoes (in two industrial settings) and turkey meat (across various products). The results will also be used to develop a guide that facilitates the widespread use of AI and breaks down barriers to implementation.
