The Horizon Europe project ZeroW directly addresses the challenge of food loss and waste by developing and testing a combination of innovations under real-world conditions. Forty-six partners from across Europe have joined forces to develop realistic solutions for significantly reducing food waste and to accelerate a just transition toward a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable food system for all.
The DIL develops solutions for low-loss processing of fruits and vegetables and provides the mobile “FOX Container” for juice processing, which was developed as part of the EU project FOX (Grant Agreement: 817683). The goal is to demonstrate and evaluate the commercialization of the container as a service; the first deployments took place in Flanders in the fall of 2023. The 12-meter-long container is equipped with technologies for low-oxygen juicing and gentle juice preservation at mild temperatures, including Pulsed Electric Field (PEF). The modular, flexible line enables decentralized processing of many crops, such as pome fruit, berries, and vegetables, and, with minor adjustments, can also handle a wider range of harvest surpluses. The system integrates washing, shredding under nitrogen to reduce oxidation, vacuum juicing, PEF preservation, and bottling.
