Automation Technology for Process Optimization and Digitalization
Automation Technology and Digitalization for Increased Efficiency and Process Optimization in Modern Food Production
Automation technology and digitalization play a central role in increasing efficiency and optimizing processes in modern food production. The food industry has long been—and continues to be—a sector characterized by artisanal craftsmanship. However, changes in supply chains driven by globalization, increasing cost pressures from retailers, and growing competition are driving constant change. Added to this are growing challenges in recruiting staff, which are particularly pronounced in the food industry.
This is increasing the need for solutions in the areas of automation technology, process optimization, and digitalization to ensure that food production is prepared for the future. The DIL supports this process by developing innovative solutions for the entire process chain and all food processing products. The goal is to develop automated and digital systems that can be flexibly integrated into existing production environments.

Automation technology and digitalization are the key to efficient, sustainable, and future-proof food production.

Artificial Intelligence and Sensor Systems for Digital Interfaces and Networked Production Control in the Food Industry
The core areas of DIL automation technology are robotics for food processing and handling, as well as machine vision systems for localization and quality control. These are complemented by artificial intelligence as well as measurement, control, and sensor systems, enabling digital interfaces between automated processes and production control. AI approaches also support the optimization of production and logistics processes, reduce food waste, and contribute to more sustainable processes.
In addition, the DIL has extensive experience in the hygienic design of components and systems, supported by 3D printing and rapid prototyping. With state-of-the-art laboratory equipment—ranging from test facilities for food robotics and AI applications to hyperspectral cameras—the institute works with partners to facilitate targeted technology transfer into practical applications. This results in customized automation solutions that promote process optimization and digitalization throughout the entire food processing chain and strengthen producers’ competitiveness.
